Extract from Rebel with Cold Feet

My name is Stella Björk and I study at Stockholm School of Economics. To tell you the truth I don’t want to become an economist, I guess I’m just here to learn what life actually is not about.

Though it would be rad to be Sweden’s first skinny bank director under the age of thirty. Right now it’s only FMMWP’s (Fat Middle-aged Men With Power) who get those jobs. My friend Karolina is very angry with this. She makes uncomfortable questions during lectures and she always listens to opera. I’ve formed the Association for Anonymous Stock Addicts (AASA) together with her and my friend Joakim. It was thought mostly as a joke, but a lot of people turned up at the meeting at the Stock Exchange room and now it’s turning into something we can no longer control.

Except for the project AASA I also have a project Lukas running. Lukas is part of the Östermalm (ed. note: the fashionable, rich and snobby part of Stockholm) crowd and will fulfill his father’s dreams. He doesn’t want to. He enjoys railings and highs just as myself. Once he showed me the school’s roof. When I got cold (mostly my feet) he warmed me. I told him he has to get free. He is afraid. I’m afraid too, because love is dangerous and life is damn tiresome, because I still don’t know what will become of me or the meaning of everything.

I usually go to the Voice Behind the Cover and try to sort out my questions. And I visit grandma who’s at the hospital and who’s very valuable and very wise. I told her that I want to change society, but I don’t know how and I’m afraid to shut my eyes to all the injustices just because that’s the easiest thing to do.

Besides, I’ve gotten to know Ida, who is a communist and worships Thåström (ed. note: A punk singer, with often controversial lyrics), and Finn, who sleeps out on the street and has beautiful dimples.

And I have a lizard.
