part 1 | part 2 | part3

How much of an important role does the education play for somebody wanting to get into the business of computer aided design?
It's a difficult question without a straight answer. Education is always important. You have to know the basics of your profession. But on the other hand you can get the information without taking a course. So you have two different ways to go. The academic and the practical. In my opinion a mix of the two is the best. Take an evening course and combine it with a job as an assistant during daytime. That is what I did and I think that counts for any profession you choose. However, it is easier to get good assisting jobs if you do have academic background. Otherwise you will have to be blessed with an idiot's persistence or really good contacts.

Which education do you have yourself?
I have taken evening courses in illustration, graphic design, typography, techniques in oil-painting, journalism. Before that I have my senior high studies with art as a major.

Is this your dream job?
Almost. I always dreamed about doing what my readers do :-) As of right now it is my dream job. It has all the creativity you can ask for, and I get to meet so many interesting people. But someday in the future I will be working with my illustrations again. Probably doing children's books. But hey, I am not complaining. Writing is one of my main interests. I just always assumed that I would be working with my art or my music and that writing would be my hobby.

What is the hardest part of being an editor-in-chief?
That you have the problem of taking crap from both above and beneath and from the right and left. Being a middlemanager you have to take the responsibility for everything, even if you and everyone around you know that it is not your mistake. Being young and female also can be tough in my position. But not as tough as I thought it would be. It has it's ups too...

What's a typical day at work like?
There is no such thing as a typical day. I know that is a cliché but its true. The phone mostly rings constantly, I have meetings with sponsors, other Editors, my own group, our vice president. You constantly fight with deadlines either for an article or for an event that has to take place. It's hectic, it's chaos and it's great! No pushing papers or staring into walls. It's doing 200 km/h through a circus.

If you could change job for a day, what job would you choose?
Oh how tempting. Something that doesn't have anything to do with the IT-business. Something totally different from what I do today. I have a friend who is a postman. He delivers the mail from his bike every morning. On sunny days like this I envy him. On a rainy day I would rather work as a librarian.

What was your dream job as a kid?
At the age of about 12-13, if you had asked me, I would have answered professional soccer player. I recently found my diary though from the age of about 13 and it says that I want to go to RMI Berghs and become an art director. My father has his own ad-agency and being daddy's girl I guess I wanted to follow in his footsteps... It's not too late. :-)
